A rare perhaps Swedish gold mounted porphyry snuff box or rounded rectangular form the top with a gold mounted micro mosaic panel of plineys doves c1810 probable the work of Raffaelli, Giacomo The doves appear frequently as the subject of micro mosaics. The image comes from a Roman floor mosaic discovered in 1737 at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli, which in turn is believed to be a copy of a lost ancient Greek mosaic at Pergamon.
